The LAW FIRM CLIMATE CHANGE SCORECARD
We created the LSCA Law Firm Climate Change Scorecard in order to understand the role the legal industry plays in the climate crisis more broadly.
The Scorecard ranks the "Vault 100" law firms according to how much fossil fuels work they have engaged in over a five-year period. It was designed to draw awareness to the indispensable role law firms play in creating, implementing, and safeguarding fossil fuel projects, as well as protecting the people who profit off of them.
The Scorecard is produced annually by LSCA student leaders. We aim to inform our peers, including students and young associates, so that they can make career decisions that are in line with their personal stake in the habitability of our one and only Earth. We also hope that firms' clients will use the information in the Scorecard to guide their hiring decisions.
In the long-term, we hope the Scorecard will push firms to move away from the fossil fuel industry and toward a livable future.
THE 2024 SCORECARD
For the first time, we will be launching a multinational report featuring data from the U.S., U.K., and Ireland; we look forward to sharing the full report on June 24th during London Climate Action Week. As U.S. law students head into on campus interviews, we hope the 2024 Scorecard and the abbreviated report exploring our methodology and key takeaways, accessible below, will prove useful in the interim.
We believe this year’s data reflects that our movement is working: this year, fossil fuel transactions have slightly decreased, and renewables transactions have increased. While the legal industry overall continues to do the bidding of Big Oil, students and young attorneys are increasingly turning the tides.
